The pacifist fundamentalist religions use shunning. The warrior class fundamentalists use killing for the same "Misdemeanors". Shunning can be as devastating as stoning in the closed and simplistic societies, where belonging and tribalism is everything.
Oh I think I'd choose the cold shoulder over a big ole stone but ya, devastating just not usually (directly) fatal.
